What Claude Is
Claude is the assistant most people meet first. It is strong at writing, summarising, research, analysing documents and thinking a problem through. For coding it works like a knowledgeable colleague in a chat window: paste in a function or a stack trace and get an answer back. That suits one-off questions and planning, and suits multi-file changes less well, because every change still has to be copied back into your project by hand.
What Claude Code Is
Claude Code is built for work that lives inside a codebase. Start it in a project directory and it can explore the files, edit several in one pass, run your test suite, read the failures and try again. It supports project instructions in a CLAUDE.md file, custom commands, hooks, subagents and skills, and it can run headless from a script or CI pipeline.
It is no longer only a terminal tool. The same Claude Code runs in the Claude Desktop app, in VS Code and JetBrains, and as cloud sessions. The recommended native installer supports macOS 13+, Windows 10 1809+ and Linux, including Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 10+ and Alpine 3.19+. An npm package still exists and needs Node.js 22 or later.

Where Your Code Goes
This is the difference most comparisons get wrong. Claude Code runs locally and your files stay on your disk, but that is not the same as your code staying private. Anthropic's data usage documentation says Claude Code sends data over the network to interact with the model, including all user prompts and model outputs, encrypted in transit. Any file content it reads becomes part of that exchange.
What happens next depends on your plan. Under commercial terms — Team, Enterprise and API — Anthropic does not train models on code sent to Claude Code, and standard retention is 30 days. On Free, Pro and Max plans, training depends on a setting you control: 5-year retention if you allow it, 30 days if you do not. So the plan you use decides how your code is handled far more than the choice between Claude and Claude Code does.
